Labiaplasty, or the surgical reduction of the outer part of the vagina, can be life-changing if the appearance of your genitalia makes you uncomfortable or unhappy. Besides making your vagina look trim and more contoured, labiaplasty can help relieve anatomy-related irritation and pain during intercourse. At The Plastics Doc in Beverly Hills and Riverside, California, plastic surgeon Dr. Samuel E. Salcedo offers labiaplasty to women who are ready to redefine their intimate appearance. Labiaplasty is a cosmetic procedure that reduces the length of the labia minora so they don’t hang down past the labia majora, or the outer hair-bearing portion of female genitalia.
When the labia minora extends too far below the mound of fatty tissue that covers the vagina, it can lead to general irritation as well as pain during intercourse. Activities like bicycling and horseback riding can also be more uncomfortable with a long labia minora.
Labiaplasty is the most commonly requested cosmetic treatment for vaginal wellness. If you have a long labia minora that causes pain during intercourse or irritation when wearing tight underwear, the benefits of the procedure are clear.
If like many women, you’re mainly interested in achieving aesthetic benefits, labiaplasty can dramatically improve the outward appearance and contour of your vagina. In addition to helping undergarments and swimsuits fit more perfectly than ever before, a tighter profile can give you newfound confidence in intimate situations.
Whether your vagina went through structural changes following weight loss, childbirth, or menopause, or you were born with an atypical labia minora, labiaplasty can help correct:
If the shape of your vagina makes you feel self-conscious or causes discomfort, labiaplasty may be an ideal solution for you.
During labiaplasty, Dr. Salcedo uses a general anesthetic to ensure you remain completely comfortable throughout the procedure. Because he makes his initial incisions on either side of the labia, you may not have any discernible scars after you heal.
Once he removes the excess tissues, he skillfully sutures the supporting tissues in place. Given the sensitivity of the area involved, Dr. Salcedo uses ultra-fine sutures to close the incisions.
Immediately after the procedure, Dr. Salcedo applies a bandage to help minimize post-surgical swelling and bruising. As your incisions heal over the course of a few days, you may find it helpful to use an inflatable cushion whenever you sit down.
You can expect to see your new, contoured shape once the initial swelling goes down. You should be able to resume normal activities, including sexual intercourse, within two to three weeks, but this will be determined by Dr. Salcedo at your postoperative visit.
