What is an eyelid lift?

Eyelid lift surgery, or blepharoplasty, achieves a more youthful appearance by removing excess fat from your eyelid area and tightening the surrounding skin. An effective way to permanently correct droopy eyelids or under-eye bags, an eyelid lift is typically performed on both the upper and lower lids.

Sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids, and persistent under-eye bags are all common effects of the natural aging process that act to weaken the muscles and skin structures that support your eyelids. This can lead to the accumulation of fatty deposits above, below, or all around your eyelids.

Some people opt to have eyelid surgery because it gives them an effective way to eliminate those stubborn under-eye bags that make them look perpetually tired; for others, the procedure is the best way to address sagging upper eyelids that interfere with their peripheral vision.

Am I a good candidate for eyelid lift surgery?

Because removing excess tissue from your upper eyelids can improve your vision, you may want to consider eyelid lift surgery if your lids are so droopy or saggy that they prevent you from opening your eyes completely.

Eyelid lift surgery may also be an ideal solution for you if the stretched, loose, or puffy skin around your eyes makes you look older or less energized than you feel. Whether you’re interested in its aesthetic benefits, its functional benefits, or both, an eyelid lift can help diminish or correct:

  • Oversized or droopy upper eyelids
  • Excess eyelid skin that interferes with your vision
  • Fatty deposits that make your eyes look puffy
  • Bags under your eyes
  • Drooping lower eyelids that expose white below your iris
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of your lower eyelid

Depending on your aesthetic goals, you may choose to have an eyelid lift in combination with another procedure like a brow lift or a face-lift.

What is Asian eyelid surgery?

Roughly half of all Asians lack a natural fold just above the lashes of the upper eyelid, and the surgery to address that is among the most common aesthetic procedures requested by Asian Americans seeking a more bright-eyed appearance. Also known as double eyelid surgery, it involves the creation of a supratarsal crease; some techniques use incisions, others employ sutures.  Younger, healthier people make for better candidates, and the recovery time depends largely on what surgical method Dr. Salcedo determines is best for you.

How should I prepare for eyelid surgery?

Before your procedure, Dr. Salcedo performs a comprehensive physical exam that may include measuring your eyelids and assessing your tear production. He also photographs your eyelids from different angles so he can better plan your surgery.

If you plan to submit a claim to your health insurance, you’ll be required to see your optometrist for a pre-procedure eye exam and vision test.

Eyelid lift surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, which means you won’t be staying overnight in the hospital. Because you won’t be able to drive yourself home afterward, it’s important to arrange a ride to and from your procedure in advance.
